Graduating from Sand Castles to Sand Art

There are a few standard activities that are a must for beach days: sunbathing, reading magazines, eating snacks, splashing in the waves, and building sand castles. As my kids grew, the sand castle building faded away… that is, until we saw some mind blowing sand art one day.

Sand Art
We happened across this amazing sand sculpture while strolling along on Balboa Island.

Inspiration is a wonderful thing, and so is the challenge of trying to master something new. I must also admit that teens don’t like to just lay on beach blankets and do nothing for very long. While we obviously cannot create the sculptures of the highly talented, I think sand and creativity lend themselves to some pretty good success.

Voila…our very own sand art!

It is also standard practice on a beach day to find a stick and write words in the sand to stand by in your photos. Well, we have taken that to a whole new level too!

Voila…interactive sand art!

It’s always a bit sad to move on from childhood activities as your kids grow, but in this case we’ve merely taken something and changed it so we can keep it going. I’m happy to have graduated from sand castles to sand art, (and from dirty sandy diapers to0!)

Sand art is so cool right – Sad that is disappears so quickly, but that is also part of its charm! If I could live in a giant sand castle I might just do it….We have one in New Zealand every year and I have never missed it! Thanks for sharing
