One of the things I love about living in Richmond, BC on Canada‘s West Coast is that I have neighbours that speak many different languages from around the world, giving me the opportunity to learn and regularly hear many different languages. Now while my adoption of different languages is quite rudimentary, one of my favourite neighbours, Glenda, has quite a phenomenal grasp of a number languages that she picked up in her years working for the airlines. She is forever giving people in our community a smile when she greets them in the language of their birth, and is able to carry on a bit of a conversation in that language.
I know that one of my favourite words now, that gives me a smile every time it rolls off my tongue, is a word that Glenda taught me. “Azizam” – which is a Persian word, meaning ‘my dear, darling, honey, sweetheart’. Glenda taught it to me when I was dating a gentleman that was originally from Iran, and it was an absolute delight to see the pleasure on his face that the sound of that word brought him.
Recently, to spread a little more love around this big, wide world of ours, I asked Glenda how to say “I love you!” in different languages from around the world. Here she is, doing just that …
Below you will find how to say “I love you!” and “I love you so much, my love!” in the 11 different languages that Glenda shared with us:
- Danish: “Jeg elsker dig!” and “Jeg elsker dig så meget, min elskede!”
- French: “Je t’aime!” and “Je t’aime beaucoup,mon amour!”
- Italian: “Ti amo!” and “Ti amo tanto amore mio!”
- Spanish: “¡Te amo!” and “¡Te amo mucho mi amor!”
- Hungarian: “Szeretlek!” and “Nagyon szeretlek szerelmem!”
- Greek: “Se agapó!” and “Se agapo toso poly agapi mou!”
- German: “Ich liebe dich!” and “Ich liebe dich so sehr, meine Liebe!”
- Arabic: “‘ahbak!” and “‘iinaa ahbuk jiddaan jiddaan habibi!”
- Cantonese: “Ngo ngoi nei!”
- Mandarin: “Wo ài ni!”
- Tagalog: “Mahal kita!” and “Mahal na mahal kita, mahal ko!”
Thanks to some of our readers, here is “I love you!” in some additional languages:
- Indonesia (thanks to Anan): “Aku cinta kamu!”
- Sinhala (thanks to Kaveen): “Mama oyata adarei!”
- Bengali (thanks to Moumita): “Aami tomake bhalobashi!”
With much love,
Erica, Glenda and the rest of our Roamancers from around World
