Virtual Travel Adventure Round-Up: Week of March 28th, 2020

E² – Entertainment & Education Newsletter & At Home Entertainment Magazine

With many people around the world in self-isolation or quarantine at the moment, we are starting to publish a regular E² – Entertainment & Education Newsletter & At Home Entertainment Magazine, focused on sharing fun, calming, and educational distractions of things that we create and find.  With this, we will be publishing regular round-ups of Virtual Travel Adventures to keep you dreaming and exploring from your living room, as we work to #FlattenTheCurve, #AloneTogether.

Virtual Travel Round-Up – Week of March 28th, 2020

Our theme this week is on Finding Your Undiscovered Potential, thanks to this post of Lori’s:

To aid in this, we’ve found all sorts of free virtual cultural adventures that will give you the opportunity to learn something new:

  • Indulge your Swiss food cravings by making a recipe from the cooking gallery on the Tourism Switzerland site.
  • Learn a bit of Swiss Italian while making one of the tasty concoctions on the Osteria La Guana blog.
  • Tantalize the taste buds with Italian cooking classes from Chef Massimo Bottura on Instagram.
  • Take music lessons from Hamilton, Ontario band, the Arkells on Instagram.

Living Room Travels

If it is exploring and learning about a destination that you fantasize about, then check out one of the free-to-watch web series, documentaries, and / or twitter feeds below:

  • Get whisked off into nature, as you explore the parks of Salt Spring Island, and meet the people they inspire in Season 1 of Naturally Ours, Naturally Salt Spring, on Seeka TV.

  • Exploring Newfoundland with The Tale Blazers.
  • Discovering the National Cowboy Museum through the eyes, prose, and tweets of the museum security guard.

  • Escaping into nature with the Google Arts and Culture exhibit and interactive documentary, The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks.
  • Visit the NFB’s Indigenous Cinema to watch Indigenous-made films for free.

For the Little Ones

Take a free virtual field trip with your kids, as you do a little bit of schooling from home:

  • Enjoy a Virtual Yoga Adventure to the Seashore with the children’s story below, that Lori created with Elementari.

As you have fun reading and playing the story below alongside your child, give yourself permission to be silly and young again! Look for elements of the story that move and prompt clicking for more action. I have even recorded a soothing version of my voice near the end as a way to calm your minds, making this a perfect nap or bedtime story.

  • Yashy Murphy and her kids are hosting two Facebook Lives a day to share their knowledge about countries they’ve been to. They chat with other kids about geography, culture and cuisine. If you have kids, they’d love to have you join them virtually at 11 am and 4 pm EST every week day on Parenting to Go’s Facebook.
  • The Kennedy Centre is hosting virtual Lunchtime Doodle Sessions for kids with their artist in residence, Mo Willems. You can see all the past doodle sessions in their YouTube Playlist and engage online with your doodles with the hashtag #MoLunchDoodles.

About Erica Hargreave

Erica Hargreave is the co-founder and editor-in-chief for Roamancing. Her vision for Roamancing is in sharing the love and beauty in this world of ours, as we explore different cultures. Over the years, Erica has won awards internationally for her writing, podcasting, and filmmaking.

As a traveller, Erica was fortunate to grow up in parks, learning about the natural and cultural history of places from her mom, and accompanying her dad on work trips abroad, where she'd explore the area on her own, taking her dad back to her favourite places once he was done his meetings. These days, she can often be found road tripping and hiking with her cat!
